Valerie Onyia Babatope

Bio
Dr. Valerie Onyia Babatope is an astute scholar and assistant Professor at Macewan University. She educates aspiring Human Resource Management (HRM) professionals, designing curriculum and facilitating online courses while fostering engaging, transformative learning environments. Recognized for her teaching excellence and innovative pedagogical approaches, she combines expertise in youth leadership, HRM, business intelligence, and management with research interests in mentoring, coaching, diversity management, community-oriented entrepreneurship, and organisational behaviour. She also serves as an action-oriented HR consultant for Canadian and Nigerian companies on developing policies that facilitate ethical and inclusive employment practices. Her work centers on addressing the complexities of mentoring and supporting neurodiverse individuals, women, and young employees, while exploring strategies organizations can adopt to build and maintain impactful mentorship initiatives. Her studies on mentorship dynamics, workplace burnout, and equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) within human resource management have been featured in prominent journals like the Future Business Journal and Business Process Management Journal, as well as being covered in media outlets such as the Institute of Directors (IoD) magazine and Business Day, Nigeria. Her research has been funded by NFRF (New Frontiers in Research Fund) and UKRI (United Kingdom Research & Innovation). She serves as an ad-hoc peer reviewer for journals including Human Resource Management Review, Business Process Management Journal, and the International Journal of Mentoring and Coaching in Education. Additionally, she contributes as a volunteer to the Academy of Management’s HR division as the coordinator of its Book Club. An avid mentoring advocate, she is the Founder of Mentorship Oasis for Female Scholars where she guides and supports a community of female scholars and emerging academics fostering mutual empowerment. Beyond academia, she is the co-founder of B8 Foods Ltd-a shawarma bistro in Lagos, Nigeria. Her professional engagements extend to consultancy, serving as a Non-executive Director/Board Member for VD Energy and Power Solutions Limited (an oil and gas firm in Lagos, Nigeria) and as a Human Resources Consultant for Errand dot Ng (Lagos, Nigeria). Prior to joining MacEwan Univerisity, she held academic positions including Professor at George Brown College, Adjunct Professor and Visiting Scholar at Toronto Metropolitan University, and Assistant Professor at Babcock University. Earlier, she served as a Postgraduate Student Ambassador at the University of Birmingham’s Business School (UK). She earned an MSc in Human Resource Management from the University of Birmingham and a Ph.D. in Business Administration with a specialization in Human Resource Management from Babcock University. Dr. Valerie Onyia Babatope’s multifaceted career in academia, research, and business underscores her unwavering commitment to advancing mentorship, diversity, and ethical HR practices on a global scale.
