Kuir Garang

Bio
Dr. Kuir ë Garang is a contract lecturer at the school of child and youth care at Toronto Metropolitical University. He also teaches courses at the social service worker program at Sheridan College. Dr. Garang has a PhD in social work, a master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies (cultural studies and philosophy) and BA in philosophy. His research addresses African-Canadian youth well-being by tackling their institutional marginalization. To achieve this, Dr. Garang uses phenomenology and sociological concepts such as Afrophobia/anti-Black racism to help youth workers and mentors avoid assumptions and stereotypes that alienate youth within institutions and organizations to which they go for assistance. Dr. Garang believes the success of the youth lies in their voices being prioritized by youth workers, mentors, and institutional authorities like teachers, principals, police, etc.
