Bio
Juliet is part of the research team at Rural eMentoring BC (ReMBC) that studies how mentorship can address the barriers rural youth face when transitioning to post-secondary education. ReMBC is an online mentoring program for rural students in BC, based at the University of British Columbia. The team uses data from the ReMBC mentoring program to explore this topic from various angles, including:
- The short-term and long-term impacts of mentoring on rural students: The team seeks to understand what kind of knowledge or skills mentoring promotes, how mentoring changes rural students' attitudes, and how mentoring influences the career and educational trajectories of rural students.
- What makes a mentoring relationship successful or unsuccessful: By analyzing the messages exchanged by mentors and mentees, the team is exploring how discussion topics and message sentiment influence relationship success. Part of this research involves using novel methods for reading an interpreting messages, including Natural Language Processing tools.
- Knowledge from a practitioner’s standpoint: ReMBC has been operating since 2016 and the research team is eager to share what they have learned from the program’s successes and challenges in the rural, online, and secondary and post-secondary education spaces.
Rural eMentoring BC was founded at UBC and is an initiative of the Rural Education Action Plan. It is a not-for-profit that is awarded funding from the Joint Standing Committee on Rural Issues from Doctors of BC.
